The Near-Death Experiences That Changed My Understanding of God

Some moments in life pass quietly, while others stay with us forever. For me, several near-death experiences became turning points that shaped my understanding of God and transformed the way I viewed life itself.

As a child, I did not have the language to explain what I was experiencing. I only knew that there were moments when I felt protected, guided, and surrounded by a peace that seemed greater than anything I could understand. Looking back, those experiences became some of the most important lessons of my life.

These near-death experiences did not lead me away from faith. Instead, they deepened it and helped me understand that God was present in ways I had never imagined.

The River That Taught Me About Peace

One of the earliest experiences happened when I was playing near the water with my brothers and a neighbor. We were enjoying the rapids on tubes when I suddenly fell into the water.

I could not swim.

As I was pulled beneath the surface, I struggled at first. Then something unexpected happened. Instead of fear, I experienced a beautiful sense of peace and contentment. I remember a light and a feeling that everything was alright.

Eventually, my neighbor reached me and pulled me to safety. Life returned to normal, but the experience stayed with me. It was my first realization that peace could exist even in the middle of danger.

That moment became one of the near-death experiences that shaped my understanding of God’s presence.

Help Arrives in Unexpected Ways

Not every lesson came through water.

During a trip to New York City, I became separated from my family on a subway platform. As a child, it could have been a frightening experience, but a kind policeman immediately stepped in to help.

He reassured me that my family would return and stayed with me until they did. Looking back, I saw more than simple kindness. I saw protection arriving exactly when it was needed.

The experience reinforced something I was beginning to learn: help often comes through ordinary people. Sometimes the people who guide us through difficult moments become instruments of God’s care.

Another Escape from Danger

Another childhood incident occurred while playing with my brothers and neighborhood children.

What began as a game suddenly became dangerous when a rope was placed around my neck.

At the exact moment help was needed, my mother arrived and pulled me to safety.

At the time, I simply felt grateful. As the years passed, I began to see the event differently. The timing felt impossible to ignore. Once again, I had been spared from harm.

Like my earlier near-death experiences, this event strengthened my belief that my life was being guided for a purpose I did not yet understand.

A Hospital Experience I Never Forgot

One of the most profound experiences came when I was sixteen years old and seriously ill with pneumonia.

My condition became so severe that a priest was called to administer last rites. As my mother sat beside me, I felt myself separate from my body. I looked down from above and experienced a freedom from pain unlike anything I had ever known.

Then I heard a clear message.

“Keep going.”

I knew with certainty that the voice was Jesus.

Soon afterward, I returned to my body. Recovery followed, but the experience never left me. Of all my near-death experiences, this one had the deepest impact on my faith.

It convinced me that life was not ending and that God was not distant. His presence was real.

Learning the Meaning of Surrender

Water entered my story again later in life when another accident left me struggling to stay afloat.

As before, fear gave way to peace when I stopped fighting and surrendered.

That lesson remained with me long after the event itself. Sometimes strength is not found in resistance. Sometimes it is found in trust.

These experiences taught me that surrender is not weakness. It is confidence that God is present even when we cannot see the path ahead.

How These Experiences Changed My Faith

The near-death experiences I encountered throughout my life changed more than my perspective on danger. They changed my understanding of God.

They taught me:

  • God is present even in difficult moments.
  • Peace can exist in the middle of uncertainty.
  • Help often arrives through ordinary people.
  • Life has purpose beyond what we immediately understand. ● Faith grows through experience as well as prayer.

Each experience became part of a larger journey that revealed a simple truth. I was never walking alone.

A Deeper Understanding of God

When I look back now, I see a thread connecting each of these events. The river, the illness, the rescues, and the moments of surrender all pointed toward the same lesson.

The near-death experiences that marked my life helped me understand that God was not far away. He was present in every season, every challenge, and every moment of grace.

Those experiences did not remove hardship from my life, but they gave me something lasting: the certainty that God’s presence remains constant. That understanding became one of the strongest foundations of my faith and one of the greatest gifts of my journey.
